WALKING & OTHER OPTIONS
Walking is just one option. Other options for getting around Tuscany are taxi’s, mopeds, the ferry. TAXI - Taxi’s are white in Tuscany. Use only at an official “rank”. If you phone ahead for a taxi the meter starts from the time you book it. This can be very expensive. Here are the rank areas in the 3 main cities. FLORENCE - Via Pellicceria Piazza di Santa Maria Novella Piazza di San Marco SIENA - Piazza Matteotti Piazza della Stazione PISA - Piazza del Duomo Piazza Garibaldi Piazza della Stazione In some of the smaller towns you may be able to find a taxi near the train stations. MOPEDS - You can rent mopeds by the hour or the day. Helmets are mandatory. All of the larger towns had plenty of moped rental places. Your hotel or the tourist office will have a list of company’s. You can ride these anywhere. Through the towns or the highway. It did look like a lot of fun. FERRY - Transportation to Elba Island - You can pick up the ferry in Piombino in Southern Tuscany every half hour. You will arrive in Portoferraio on Elba. CARRIAGE RIDE - While in Florence we had a carriage ride. It was a wonderful way to see the city. Most of the drivers speak English and prices were negotiable depending on how many people. I found for the information we received for the price it was a great way to see the sites. WALKING - This is, I believe, how the Italians stay so fit. Up and down hills on the cobblestone streets gives you a great workout. It is the best way to see all of Tuscany. There are WALKING TOURS that you can pay for. But we did just fine by ourselves. There is so much to see and because each town has its main square it is all very easy to plan the day just strolling and resting at a café.
